Everyone has either known someone with back pain, or had back pain themself.
Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation out there about back pain.
Our very own Mythbuster, Hamish, is setting the story straight!
Myth #1: scans are always needed to detect the cause of back pain
The truth? scans do not determine the cause or prognosis of an episode of back pain. they are generally not needed for most cases of back pain
Myth #2: pain related to movement or exercise is a sign that further damage is being done
The truth? Graduated exercise and movement in all directions is safe and healthy for your spine
Myth #3: low back pain is always a serious medical condition and will become a life-long issue
The truth? Low back pain is not a serious, life-threatening medical condition. Most people who encounter an episode of back pain can make a full recovery
Myth #4: low back pain is cause by poor posture or a weak ‘core’
The truth? Spine posture during sitting, standing or lifting does not predict low back pain. A weak ‘core’ does not cause low back pain. People who have tense trunk muscles and a rigid upright posture often have more back pain than those who are relaxed in their postures.
Myth #5: repeated spinal loading results in ‘wear and tear’ and damage to your back
The truth? spine movement and loading is vital for spine health. It’s safe and helps forge resilience and strength as long as it’s built up over time.
