With summer here, many of us get into outdoor activities, from casual strolls to more vigorous outdoor pursuits. Use these tips to stay safe in the sunny months while being active!
Hydration is key!
Staying hydrated is super important for safe summer workouts. When we sweat, our body cools down, but it also loses fluids. Dehydration can lead to muscle cramps, tiredness, and heat-related issues. It’s crucial to remember this during the holiday season when we often have more food and drinks. While enjoying Christmas, keep in mind that too much food and alcohol can promote dehydration. So, drink water throughout the day, not only when you’re exercising!
Time workouts or activities
Exercising during the hot part of the day can increase the risk of heat-related issues. Consider completing your activities in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler. If midday is your only option, seek shaded areas and take frequent breaks to cool down.
Wear the right clothing
Wearing the right clothing can make help you stay cool during summer workouts. Opt for lightweight, moisture-wicking fabrics that allow your skin to breathe. Also, if you’re out in the sun, make sure to wear a hat and lots of sunscreen!
Listen to your body
It is so important to pay attention to your body’s signals. If you experience any dizziness, weakness, stop exercising and cool down straight away. Overexertion in the heat can lead to more severe conditions such as heat exhaustion.
Have fun!!
It’s not always possible to keep up your regular exercise or activity routine over the Christmas period. It’s a great time to try some new activities, run around with the young ones or play games with friends. Movement of any kind is always amazing, so don’t stress too much over missing a few work outs!
