Whiplash and Physiotherapy

February 28, 2024 By Abby Aitchison

Whiplash and Physiotherapy

Whiplash is a type of neck injury that is caused by a sudden, forceful movement of the head. It is most often caused by a rear-end car accidents, but can also be caused by other types of accidents, such as falls or sports injuries.

The symptoms of whiplash can vary from person to person, but they include:

  • Neck pain

  • Headache

  • Dizziness

  • Fatigue

  • Numbness or tingling in the arms or hands

  • Muscle spasms

  • Difficulty sleeping

  • Difficulty concentrating

In most cases, the symptoms of whiplash will improve on their own within a few weeks. It’s much less likely, but some people may experience pain or other symptoms that last for months or even years.

Physiotherapy can be very helpful for people with whiplash. We can help to:

  • Reduce pain and inflammation

  • Improve range of movement

  • Strengthen the neck muscles

  • Teach you exercises to do at home

If you have been diagnosed with whiplash, it is important to see a physiotherapist as soon as possible – within 10 days is best. We’d love to help you get back to your work, sport and daily activities as soon as possible and prevent any long term problems.
